They managed to pull the 85 kg man, made heavier by the woollen clothing and the thick leather boots he was wearing, onto one of their boards. a Copy "They noticed the fishermen" into your workbook and mark the verb, subject and object. b Make a compound sentence using "The captain was heavy. He had heavy boots on." 2 Make a complex sentence using "The captain was heavy. He was wearing wool." Use words like "because", "since", "when" or "after". 3 Turn these two simple sentences into a compound sentence, by adding a conjunction: "The surfers abandoned the waves. They helped the passengers." 4 Explain which paragraph sounds more mature, and which sounds more childlike. 5 Complex sentences make writing sound mature. a Turn these three clauses into one complex sentence, by adding two subordinating conjunctions: "The wave hit the side of the boat.
