They cause particles in the medium to vibrate back and forth in the same direction as the wave travels. This back-and-forth motion is what we refer to as longitudinal waves, which is why sound is often classified in this category.

If you’re interested in experimenting with sound waves, try creating your own musical instrument! For example, you could make a simple string instrument by stretching rubber bands over a box and plucking them. This will let you see (and hear) how vibrations create sound waves, and you can even change the pitch by adjusting the tension of the rubber bands!
