The Deep Dive
Ionic bonds typically form between metals and nonmetals, where one atom donates electrons, and the other accepts them. For example, sodium (Na) and chlorine (Cl) will form an ionic bond. On the other hand, covalent bonds occur between nonmetals when they share electrons to achieve octets, as seen in the bond between hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O) in water (H2O).
Sometimes, though, no bonds will form if both elements are noble gases or have a complete valence shell, like neon (Ne) and argon (Ar). These elements prefer to stay as individual atoms!
