What is a prosthesis and orthotic device?

A prosthesis is an artificial replacement for a missing body part. For example, when someone loses a limb through trauma, illness, or congenital conditions, a prosthetic limb (like an arm, leg, hand, or foot) is designed to replicate some of the functions of the original limb, improving mobility and independence. An orthotic device, on the other hand, is an external support used to correct, support, or enhance the function of a body part that is present but may be weakened, misaligned, or injured. Orthotics come in many forms, such as braces for the knee, ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs), wrist splints, or back supports. Their primary goal is to aid stabilization, reduce pain, or prevent further injury by helping the body move in a more effective or safer way.
